Trudi Starbeck Miller

Trudi Starbeck Miller - Vitreous Enamel

I am a woman who is inspired to make art. I am fortunate to be a mother,
grandmother, wife, friend, and a teacher.

I am a native second-generation Californian living in Iowa city, Iowa.

I earned my Bachelors of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the
University of Iowa in Metal and Jewelry Design, a secondary practice in
Ceramics and in graduate school a Center for the Book Certificate.

My work is inspired by my maternal grandmother’s journey. She left her family, friends, and the only home she knew when she was thirty years old. She earned her living as a lace maker. She immigrated  from a small village in Bohemia, now known as the Czech Republic in May of 1929. She travelled on a ship called The Reliance and like so many immigrants, she never returned to her homeland.

My work is inspired by my maternal grandmother’s journey.

I work primarily with vitreous enamel and hand painting on formed metals of copper, silver and steel, textiles and ceramics often integrating my story within my work. I hope my work that causes the viewer to have an awareness of a safe place and the importance of what and how women make with their hands.

“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing.  Making your unknown known is the important thing.”
