Ritu Jain - Textiles
I have loved textiles every since I was a kid. I always had art projects going and my mom taught me to sew at the age of 5. I studied Fiber Arts at the University of Iowa where I learned printing, dying, and weaving from wonderful instructors.
In 1991 I followed my heart and opened Textiles, a fabric store in Iowa City. My idea was to print and weave my own fabrics to sell along with fabrics I carried from around the world. I was hoping to travel and discover beautiful textiles in other countries, but alas, once you open a business, you can’t leave it. My business grew along with my passion and evolved into a women’s clothing store.
I am grateful to be able to do what I love my entire life!!
Now 29 years later, I am back to creating textiles. I discovered Eco Printing (a fairly new art form) about 5 years ago. It’s a magical process that uses leaves to leave their mark on fabric. It’s different every time and always a surprise. Being a newer artform, there is still a lot of experimentation happening and it’s changing all the time. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature. I know more about trees and plants than I ever have before and I get to spend hours outside gathering leaves (or art materials)! I am grateful to be able to do what I love my entire life!!
