Cardinal with Lights is an assemblage of various papers and Amate. Amate is often referred to as “Mexican Bark Paper”, although it is not a true paper. It is made out of the inner bark of a mulberry variety which has been fermented but not cooked and beaten as are paper fibers. The amate sheet was torn to create the shape of the tree. I used a marbled paper for the “ground, a lightweight lavender paper with plant inclusions for the snow and a Thai paper for the snow sky. The electric light cord is made from green crackle Cave paper. The cardinal is also made from Cave Papers red. The original is matted and framed in such a way that it can be back lit to reveal the decoration on the back side of the Thai paper. I had not intended for the decoration to “show” but it was photographed that way for the postcard so it is framed to have that option. The piece non-framed would be $65. Please email me if you would like the piece unframed, just matted. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
